Střelnice Olomouc: 750kg Ammunition Found in Garden
Unexploded Ordnance Found Near Shooting Range in Olomouc Region
A meaningful cache of ammunition, including ordnance dating back to the First Republic era, was discovered in a garden near a shooting range in the Olomouc region on Thursday evening, September 25, 2025, around 7:00 PM local time. Police immediately secured the area, halting all work untill daylight allowed for a safe assessment and removal operation.
according to police spokeswoman ivana Skoupilová, pyrotechnicians took control of the situation Friday morning. A controlled detonation of a portion of the ammunition occurred shortly after noon in a designated safe zone located behind Olomouc, in the direction of Šternberk. The remaining unexploded ordnance is being transported for professional disposal.
The discovery included artillery shells from the First Republic period (1918-1938), indicating a possibly long-buried and forgotten stockpile. However, Skoupilová also confirmed that the collection contained ammunition from periods both before and after the First Republic, suggesting multiple deposition events over time. The precise origins and history of the various munitions are currently under inquiry.
Authorities have not released details regarding the size of the cache or the specific types of ammunition found beyond confirming its historical range. The incident highlights the ongoing risk posed by unexploded ordnance, notably in areas with a history of military activity. Residents are reminded to report any suspicious findings to local authorities immediately.
