Captain Thomas Shoots of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection for San Diego County stated that students were evacuated from school buildings as a precautionary measure when the shaking began. Shoots said he received an earthquake alert on his devices and then felt the ground moving.
“There was a lot of movement and shaking,” Shoots said. “But fortunately, everything seems to have returned to normal.”
Gold Mine Experiences Shaking
Paul Nelson, owner of Eagle Mining Co., a gold mine in Julian where visitors can learn about gold panning, described the earthquake as “quite strong.” He reported no damage to the mine itself or the gift shop.
Nelson noted that a couple of picture frames fell at the gift shop counter. “I thought the single-pane windows were going to break because they were trembling a lot, but they didn’t,” he said.
Previous Tremor and Public Reaction
Nelson added that a smaller earthquake occurred in the area on Sunday. At that time,approximately 20 to 30 visitors were in the mine. He said everyone remained calm and continued their tour after the shaking stopped. He noted that Monday’s earthquake was stronger and lasted longer, but there were no visitors present at the time.
“People are scared because it was quite strong and threw things from the shelves,” Nelson said, adding that a helicopter was observed flying over the area after the quake.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has been briefed on the earthquake, according to a statement released by his office on social media. State authorities are working wiht local agencies to assess any potential damage.
