The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said last night that it was summoning the Chinese ambassador to South Korea and made a strong protest.

This is a follow-up to the comments of a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson who harshly criticized President Yoon Seok-yeol’s foreign media interview regarding the Taiwan issue.

First Vice Minister Jang Ho-jin, who summoned Ambassador Xing Haiming, pointed out that it was diplomatic impoliteness for the spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry to make a rude comment in response to President Yoon’s reference to the general principle of the international community against unilateral changes. to the status quo by force. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Vice Minister Zhang also emphasized that the Chinese side should make efforts to ensure that this case does not cause unnecessary disruption to the development of bilateral relations.

In a recent interview with Reuters, President Yoon said of the rising tension over Taiwan, “It happened because of an attempt to change the status quo by force,” and said, “We are totally opposed to it.”

“The Taiwan issue is not just an issue between China and Taiwan,” he said.

It is unusual for the president to comment so directly on the Taiwan issue after the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and China, and the comments are in line with the US position.

In response, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs protested strongly, mixing harsh words, saying, “Do not interfere with others.”

“It is the Chinese people’s responsibility to resolve the Taiwan issue, and we do not allow anyone to interfere.”

China said it hopes South Korea will strictly adhere to the “One China” principle and handle the Taiwan issue carefully.

The issue of Taiwan is one of the so-called ‘red lines’ that China can never accept, and it is evaluated to have more explosive power than THAAD in the past.

As Korea and China have exchanged strong words over the issue of Taiwan, one of the most sensitive issues in the region, there are concerns that relations between Korea and China will quickly become strained.
