Anti-war demonstrations at universities that began in the United States, including sit-ins in support of Palestine in Germany, Ireland, and Switzerland, are spreading to Europe. According to the German daily Tagesspiegel/Süddeutsche Zeitung on the 4th (local time), the day before, around 300 people staged a sit-in protest at Humboldt University (HU) in Berlin and around 100 people at Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) . ) campus in Munich.

Students chanted slogans supporting Palestine, such as ‘Long live Palestine’ and ‘Stop the holocide.’

Slogans such as ‘From Columbia to Munich’ and ‘Occupy German Universities’ also appeared in solidarity with the recent campus protests that spread in the United States and France. Julia von Blumenthal, president of Humboldt University, suggested creating a separate space for discussion rather than protests.

However, students accused the president of being a ‘Zionist’ (Jewish nationalist) and demanded his resignation.

Last February, Humboldt University invited an Israeli Supreme Court justice to hold a legal debate, but the event was canceled due to protests from pro-Palestinian protesters. Berlin police forcefully dispersed a protest on the Humboldt University campus.

In the process, 38 protesters who refused to comply with the eviction order were arrested, and 37 cases, including inciting hatred, obstructing official duties, and assault, were being investigated. The Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, wrote on

Berlin police said they deployed officers after protesters began shouting inflammatory slogans.

Local media said police disagreed with the slogan ‘From the River to the Sea’, which was banned in Germany after Hamas attacked Israel in October last year.

In Ireland, dozens of students at Trinity College, University of Dublin protested for two days starting the day before by setting up a tent in the central square of the campus and building benches in front of the library to block access.

Trinity College Library is also considered a tourist attraction because it houses and displays the 9th century Latin gospel book, ‘The Book of Kells’.

Reuters reported that the students are demanding that Israeli universities cut ties with them and withdraw investment plans in affiliated companies.

The Irish government has recently declared its intention to recognize Palestine as a state, making a conciliatory voice towards Palestine.

However, the students set up a protest tent after imposing a fine of 214,000 euros (about 310 million won) on the student council, claiming that the university had suffered losses due to various protests, including those supporting Palestine . At the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, around 100 students occupied the entrance to the campus building on the 2nd and began a sit-in protest, demanding a boycott of Israeli researchers, an immediate ceasefire in the war in the Gaza Strip, and the resumption of funding for United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Anti-war protests began in American universities at Columbia University in New York on the 17th of last month and they continue across the country.

Authorities have arrested more than 2,200 people so far. Since the end of last month, protests have also been taking place at European universities, including the French political school Science PO, the Sorbonne University, and the University of Warwick in the UK.
