Regular coffee drinkers show distinct biological differences in body composition, metabolic markers, and sex hormones, according to a peer-reviewed study published on July 16, 2026, in the European Journal of Nutrition. Researchers at the University of Oulu in Finland analyzed data from 2,264 adults aged 46 participating in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 to evaluate how habitual coffee consumption connects to human metabolism, though the observational design means direct cause-and-effect remains unproven.

Body Composition and Metabolic Markers in Coffee Drinkers

Participants who drank more coffee tended to have less total body fat and visceral fat, alongside greater skeletal muscle mass, according to the University of Oulu findings. These differences in body composition appeared even though participants across different consumption groups maintained a similar body mass index (BMI). Chronically elevated BCAAs have previously been linked to insulin resistance and a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

To capture these trends, the Finnish research team evaluated participants across distinct consumption tiers, ranging from non-drinkers up to individuals consuming five or more cups daily. Writing for SciTechDaily, lead author and doctoral researcher Luca Verroest noted that the analysis controlled for BMI and lifestyle factors. What stood out in our findings was a distinct hormonal signature that didn’t disappear even after we took into account BMI and lifestyle factors, with several of these associations differing between men and women, Verroest stated.

Hormonal Differences and Sex-Specific Patterns

The study identified clear hormonal variations linked to coffee intake, with the most pronounced patterns emerging among male participants. According to data covered by en.sedaily.com, men who consumed higher amounts of coffee exhibited a more favorable glucose-insulin profile, lower fasting insulin, higher total and bioavailable testosterone, and increased concentrations of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). At the same time, male participants showed modestly lower free testosterone and free androgen index values.

Among female participants, the hormonal associations were more limited in scope. Women with higher coffee consumption primarily displayed elevated sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) alongside lower measures of free androgens. Despite these associations, investigators emphasized that the findings rely on bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and a single point-in-time observational framework, meaning researchers cannot confirm whether coffee directly drives changes in muscle mass or fat reduction.

Public Health Context and Future Research

The research carries particular relevance in Finland, where average coffee consumption ranks among the highest globally at approximately 11.8 kilograms per person each year. Researchers suggest that a combination of more than 1,000 bioactive compounds in coffee—including caffeine, cafestol, kahweol, and chlorogenic acid—may influence sympathetic nervous activity, energy expenditure, and glucose metabolism. However, investigators cautioned against assuming that higher consumption automatically yields better health outcomes.

Luca Verroest advised keeping daily caffeine intake within a maximum of 400 milligrams to avoid potential side effects, medication interactions, or issues related to processing diterpenes. Because variables such as cup size, roasting methods, and the addition of milk or sugar were not tracked in granular detail, the research team is currently conducting animal model studies. These follow-up efforts aim to isolate specific active compounds and lay the groundwork for future human intervention trials before any official dietary recommendations are updated.
