It was confirmed that American nurses were retiring early due to issues such as lack of manpower and poor quality of life even before the novel coronavirus (Corona 19) pandemic.

Researchers from the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research (CHOPR) at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing released a study published by the American Medical Association on the 9th (local time) that found that the main reason why American nurses they leave their jobs before retirement Age is due to poor working conditions and was published in the academic journal “Zama Network Open”.

Researchers examined reasons for retirement among 7,887 New York and Illinois nurses who left their jobs between 2018 and 2021. The most common reason for retirement was retirement age at 59%. Around 40% retired early due to poor working conditions such as labor shortage, physical and mental exhaustion and work-life imbalance.

Karen Lasseter, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing who conducted the study, pointed out, “Nurses were working in an understaffed environment even before the COVID-19 pandemic.” CHOPR researcher Jane Muir pointed out: “Because we have been unable to improve the work environment for nurses for a long time, nurses are retiring early and abandoning the medical field.” Ways to improve nurses’ work-life balance include improving working time flexibility, such as reducing shift working hours and increasing work allowances on weekends and holidays .
