Study Shows COVID-19 Increases Asthma Symptoms and Mortality by Over 50%: Severe Patients at Higher Risk

One study showed that when asthma patients contract COVID-19, symptoms increase by more than 50% and the mortality rate increases by more than 70%. This was more severe in severe patients than in mild patients.

The research team of Professors Sang-heon Kim, Hyun Lee and Bo-geun Kim from the Department of Respiratory Allergy at Hanyang University Hospital analyzed the impact of COVID-19 on worsening symptoms and mortality in asthma patients and published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

The subjects of this study were 10,739 asthma patients (comparison group) who recovered after COVID-19 infection based on big data from the National Health Insurance Corporation (October to December 2020). They were compared with an equal number of uninfected patients (control group).

As a result, the number of patients with worsening asthma symptoms was approximately 1.5 times that of the comparison group (187.3 cases versus 119.3 cases per 10,000 people, respectively). The number of deaths was 1.7 times higher (128.3 versus 73.5).

In particular, the risk of worsening of asthma and death was found to be 5.12 and 7.31 times higher respectively in severe patients compared to mild patients.
