[메디컬투데이=이승재 기자] One study showed that salt substitutes reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and death compared to regular salt.

The results of a study comparing the effects of salt substitutes on the risk of cardiovascular disease and death from all causes compared to regular salt were published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

If you have cardiovascular disease, your healthcare provider may advise you to eat less salty foods. This is because excessive sodium intake is associated with worsening cardiovascular disease and risk of death. However, these low-salt diets are often undermined by the desire to have a delicious meal.

Various salt substitutes have emerged as an alternative to this problem. Salt substitutes contain less sodium and more potassium than regular salt.

Australian researchers analyzed 16 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to see whether these salt substitutes improved the risk of cardiovascular disease and death compared to regular salt. Eight of the 16 studies reported data on the incidence of cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality following consumption of salt substitutes.

The study found that salt substitutes reduce the risk of cardiovascular events and death from all causes compared to regular salt.

The researchers explained that salt substitutes have health benefits because the high amounts of potassium in them help balance electrolytes. However, he added that because most of the research being analyzed was conducted in Asia, it may be difficult to apply it to Western countries.

Based on these findings, the researchers concluded that salt substitutes reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and death compared to regular salt.
