Political signals are growing in Sudan, suggesting a potential shift towards negotiations following statements from civilian leaders regarding decisions made by the President of the sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan. Thes developments offer a glimmer of hope amidst the ongoing conflict.
Civilian Leaders Express Optimism
Orwa Al-Sadiq, leader of the Sumoud Alliance and the National Umma Party, stated that Al-Burhan has taken steps he characterizes as a move towards peace. Al-Sadiq noted this is the first time he has publicly expressed recognition for actions taken by the head of the Sovereignty Council. He indicated that various procedures are already underway, including easing restrictions on passport issuance.
Al-Sadiq also reported serious contacts with steadfast forces, suggesting a desire to transition away from a purely military approach to the conflict. Moreover,he highlighted supportive positions taken by other military leaders,including Lieutenant General Shams al-Din Kabbashi,Lieutenant General Yasser al-Atta,and Lieutenant General Jaber,aimed at mitigating suffering in various states.
Al-Burhan Directives on Identification Documents
Lieutenant General Al-Burhan issued directives to the Ministry of Interior instructing officials not to prevent citizens from obtaining identification papers due to existing criminal reports. Observers suggest these directives followed Al-Burhan’s visit to Saudi Arabia. During the visit, both Riyadh and Washington reportedly urged Al-Burhan to strengthen communication with civilian forces, including the Resilience Coalition, as part of broader efforts to end the war and establish a civilian government. These efforts are aimed at creating a framework for a stable and democratic Sudan.
