Sue Bird has become the first WNBA player to have a statue unveiled in her honor, a testament to her remarkable career and impact on the sport. The statue was unveiled in Seattle, where Bird spent her entire 20-year professional career with the Seattle Storm.
Bird’s illustrious basketball journey with the Storm included a record-tying four WNBA championships and 13 All-Star selections, following her selection as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 draft. She remains the Storm’s all-time leading scorer with 6,803 points and holds the WNBA record for assists with 3,234.
Beyond the WNBA, Bird achieved unparalleled success on the international stage, earning five Olympic gold medals with Team USA. her No. 10 jersey has been retired by the Storm, and she was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in April 2023.
“The city has given me a home, a place where I could have a career, a place where I felt welcome,” Bird expressed during the unveiling ceremony. “A place where I really grew up. I mean in a lot of ways, I really grew up here.”
She continued, reflecting on the permanence of the honor: “This is really exciting to be – I don’t even no if honored really covers it because it’s a bronze statue that will be there forever. And, it feels different when you think of it that way.”
