The supergroup Sun Dont Shine, formerly known as Eye Am, is making waves with the release of their new single, “Power To Live,” and the announcement of an April 1st release date for their debut album, Birth To Death. The band is a formidable collective comprised of musicians with deep roots in the sludge and gothic metal scenes.

Sun Dont Shine features Kirk Windstein on guitar and vocals (Crowbar, Down, Kingdom of Sorrow), Kenny Hickey on guitar and vocals (Type O Negative), Johnny Kelly on drums (also Type O Negative), and Todd Strange on bass (Crowbar, Down). The project represents a significant convergence of talent within a specific current of metal music.

Birth To Death will be released via Corpse Paint Records. “Power To Live” follows previous singles released by the band, including “” offering fans another taste of what to expect from the full-length album. A music video for “Power To Live” is slated for release on February 23rd.

The song itself was written by Hickey and Windstein and recorded at OCD Studios during the summer of 2025. Duane Simoneaux produced the track, with co-production credits going to Vinnie LaBella.

This latest release builds on momentum established with the band’s first EP, “Coming Down,” which was released in August 2025. That four-song EP, while original, didn’t garner widespread attention.

The Meaning Behind “Power To Live”

According to reports, “Power To Live” originated from a discussion surrounding the single’s striking cover art. Hickey reportedly expressed his dismay at humanity’s continued inability to evolve beyond violence. This observation became the central theme of the song – a stark acknowledgement of historical failures coupled with a defiant refusal to succumb to them.

Sun Dont Shine explained the song’s intent, stating, “The track is a challenge to the times we’re living in, an insistence on survival and consciousness in the face of cycles that refuse to break.”

The band collaborated with visual artist Nadiya Vizier (known for her work with Crowbar and Sailor Bob tattoo) on the cover artwork for “Power To Live.” To commemorate the release, Sun Dont Shine and Vizier have launched a limited-edition art collaboration, including 100 hand-signed posters, a custom sticker sheet, and a limited run of trucker caps featuring original artwork from the release.

The music video for “Power To Live” was directed by Mike Holderbeast, who has previously worked with bands like Down and Corrosion of Conformity.

The formation of Sun Dont Shine, and now the impending release of Birth To Death, represents a significant moment for fans of the bands involved. The combined pedigree of Windstein, Hickey, Kelly, and Strange promises a powerful and emotionally resonant debut album. The band’s willingness to tackle challenging themes, as evidenced by the lyrical content of “Power To Live,” suggests a project that aims to be more than just a showcase of individual talent.

The April 1st release date positions Birth To Death as a key release in the spring metal calendar. With a growing fanbase and critical attention building around their singles, Sun Dont Shine is poised to make a substantial impact on the metal landscape. The limited-edition art collaboration also demonstrates a commitment to engaging with fans beyond the music itself, offering a tangible connection to the band’s creative vision.

The band’s origins as Eye Am, and the eventual rebranding to Sun Dont Shine, suggest a deliberate evolution of their artistic identity. The shift in name may reflect a broader thematic focus or a desire to distance themselves from previous expectations. Regardless, the current iteration of the band appears fully formed and ready to deliver on the promise of its impressive lineup.
