Google CEO Sundar Pichai Experiments with AI Coding

⁣ Updated June 05, 2025

San Francisco—Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, revealed he’s been⁤ experimenting with AI to generate code, a practice known as “vibe coding,” to construct a⁢ personalized webpage. Pichai spoke at Bloomberg⁣ Tech in San Francisco ⁤on Wednesday, detailing his use of AI coding assistants like cursor and Replit.

These platforms allow users ⁤to create code through simple text prompts. Pichai said he ⁢is building a custom webpage using AI to consolidate his preferred data sources. He noted the progress coding has made.

The term ‍”vibe coding” was popularized by OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy. karpathy suggested in a February post on X,⁤ formerly Twitter, that AI tools are evolving to a‌ point ‌were developers can largely bypass customary coding, instructing AI to develop projects and applications.

The rise of “vibe coding” has boosted the popularity of AI coding assistants. Cursor, for ‌example,⁤ became ‍the ‍fastest-growing software application to reach $100 million in annual recurring revenue in January. Replit reports its ‍users⁣ have created over 2 million applications in six months and boasts ⁢34 million users as of november.

even individuals without ⁤coding backgrounds are leveraging “vibe coding.” Lenard Flören, an art director, told NBC news he‍ utilized‍ AI tools ‌to create a custom workout tracking application. Rishab Jain, a neuroscience student at Harvard,‌ used Replit to develop an application translating ancient texts into English. Jain ‍said that now, users can create their own apps instead of paying subscription fees for existing ones.

Despite the growing capabilities of AI,⁤ Pichai emphasized the continued importance of⁤ human software engineers. ⁢He stated Google intends to keep expanding its engineering workforce, viewing AI as a⁣ tool to ⁤enhance engineers’ productivity.

Alphabet currently ranks as the fifth most valuable company globally, with‌ a market capitalization of $2 ⁤trillion.
