Zurich, Switzerland — On the 34th matchday of the Swiss Super League season, nearly a dozen players from various clubs, including five from Grasshopper Club Zurich (GC) and head coach Patrick Rahmen of FC Winterthur, were handed suspensions following disciplinary actions by the Swiss Football League (SFL). The suspensions stem from incidents occurring during recent fixtures, resulting in multiple red cards and subsequent bans that will see the affected individuals miss upcoming matches.

According to official confirmation from sport.ch and the SFL disciplinary committee, Grasshopper Club Zurich was particularly affected, with five of its players receiving suspensions for violations committed during their match against FC Luzern on April 19, 2026. The specific nature of the infractions was not detailed in the initial report, but such sanctions typically follow violent conduct, serious foul play, or accumulating two yellow cards in a single game.

Patrick Rahmen, head coach of FC Winterthur, was also among those sanctioned. His suspension comes after an incident on the touchline during Winterthur’s match against Servette FC on April 18, 2026, where he was dismissed by the referee for dissent. Under SFL regulations, a coach’s dismissal results in an automatic one-match touchline ban, which Rahmen will serve during the club’s upcoming fixture.

The SFL confirmed that in total, eleven individuals — ten players and one coaching staff member — were sanctioned ahead of the 34th matchday. This number represents one of the highest concentrations of suspensions in a single matchday during the 2025-26 season, significantly impacting team selections and tactical planning for several clubs as they approach the final stretch of the campaign.

Grasshopper Club Zurich, already navigating a challenging season near the relegation zone, will face additional strain without the services of its five suspended players. The club has not released an official statement detailing the identities of the sanctioned athletes, but internal sources confirmed to regional media that the absences include key contributors from both defensive and midfield units.

FC Winterthur, under Rahmen’s guidance, has been fighting to avoid relegation and will now have to manage the next match without their head coach on the bench. Assistant coaches are expected to take over touchline duties during Rahmen’s suspension, in accordance with league protocol.

The Swiss Football League emphasized that all disciplinary decisions were made following video review and referee reports, in line with its commitment to maintaining fair play and player safety. Clubs have the right to appeal sanctions within a specified window, though no appeals have been announced as of yet.

As the Super League enters its decisive phase, the absence of multiple players and a head coach due to suspension could influence the outcomes of crucial matches, particularly in the battle to avoid relegation and secure European qualification spots.
