Recent closures and FSAI Orders
A busy SuperValu supermarket on the northside of cork city, Singleton’s SuperValu in Hollyhill, was temporarily closed this week by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) for the second time in a month. The store posted a notice on Monday, September 29, indicating the temporary closure and an expected reopening later in the week.
The FSAI issued a closure order thru the Health Service executive (HSE) on Monday, September 29, to Crimdale Developments Limited, the owners of the store, which is currently in receivership. The FSAI publishes enforcement orders online, but a notice of the September 29th order was reportedly delayed due to technical issues within the FSAI.
Company Response and local Reaction
Musgrave, the owner of the SuperValu franchise, declined to comment when contacted by The echo on monday. Fianna Fáil city councillor Tony Fitzgerald stated that the receivers informed him the store is now anticipated to reopen on Sunday, November 3, 2024.
Previous Closure in September
This closure follows a previous FSAI order issued to Crimdale Developments Limited on September 4, 2024, which was lifted on September 6, 2024. The FSAI has not yet released the reason for the initial September 4th closure, but a full report is expected in the coming weeks.
Following the september 4th closure,a Musgrave spokesperson initially stated the closure was to allow for “essential maintenance works.” When pressed for details, the spokesperson clarified that the closure was due to a “pest control issue.” They added, “Immediate action was taken to resolve this matter, including engaging external contractors, and the store fully reopened on Saturday, September 6, and is continuing to trade as normal.” The spokesperson emphasized that “the health and safety of customers and staff at supervalu Hollyhill is and remains our top priority.”
Understanding FSAI closure Orders
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has the authority to issue closure orders to food businesses that pose a risk to public health. These orders can be issued under the Food Safety Act 1997. Closure orders can range from partial to full closures and require the business to address the identified issues before reopening. The FSAI maintains a public register of enforcement orders, providing transparency about food safety standards in Ireland.
