The Growing Recognition of Holistic Cancer Care

For decades, cancer treatment focused primarily on the biological aspects of the disease. Though,a growing understanding of the patient experience emphasizes the crucial role of emotional, social, and practical support. This holistic approach, known as supportive care, addresses the fear, fatigue, loneliness, and anxiety that often accompany a cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The Dar Zhor association in Morocco has been a leading advocate for this shift, positioning supportive care as a central component of modern oncology. They recently presented the findings of a groundbreaking study on its impact at a dedicated conference.

Key Findings of the Dar Zhor Study

the study, the first of its kind conducted in Morocco with rigorous psychosocial methodology, reveals the profound effects of supportive care on cancer patients. According to the study results, 53% of patients reported a strengthened sense of belonging to a community through participation in supportive care programs. Moreover, 27% experienced no change in their relationships, particularly with distant family and neighbors, suggesting that supportive care can definitely help maintain existing social connections during a challenging time.

Dr. Myriam Nciri, President of Dar Zhor, emphasized the importance of these findings, stating that “Supportive cancer care is now an essential pillar of overall patient care.” She highlighted the need for this type of research within the Moroccan context, demonstrating that moroccan teams can achieve the same positive outcomes as those seen internationally.

Advocating for Systemic change

The Dar Zhor association argues that supportive care is not merely a supplemental service, but a basic medical and human necessity. Currently, these services are not covered by MoroccoS Compulsory Health Insurance (AMO). The association is actively campaigning for official recognition of supportive care within public policies and its integration into the curriculum of Moroccan medical faculties.

Dar Zhor also calls for broader mobilization from institutions, businesses, universities, and the media to ensure that supportive care becomes accessible to all cancer patients. Integrating these services into the standard care pathway, they believe, will preserve patient dignity, reduce health inequalities, and support healing in all its dimensions.

Editor’s Analysis

This study from Morocco is a valuable contribution to the growing body of evidence supporting the importance of holistic cancer care. The findings align with international research demonstrating that addressing the psychosocial needs of cancer patients improves their quality of life and potentially their treatment outcomes. The call for integration into medical education is particularly crucial, as it will equip future healthcare professionals with the skills and knowledge to provide truly patient-centered care. The lack of coverage by Compulsory Health Insurance represents a significant barrier to access, and addressing this will be key to ensuring equitable care for all Moroccan cancer patients.
