High-Fat Diet Before Surgery Linked to Memory Problems

A new study indicates that consuming a high-fat diet in teh days leading up to surgery could trigger an inflammatory response in the brain,potentially leading to weeks of impaired memory function. The research, conducted at The Ohio State University and published in Brain, Behaviour, and Immunity, suggests this effect is seen in both older and young adults.
The study also found that supplementing with DHA omega-3 fatty acids for a month prior to the unhealthy diet and surgical procedure prevented memory-related issues in both aged and young adult rats. researchers focused on the impact of a high-fat diet and surgery on cognitive function, specifically memory.
ruth Barrientos, an investigator at Ohio State’s Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research, noted the compounding effect of multiple health insults. “We’ve shown that an unhealthy diet, even in the short term, especially when it’s consumed so close to a surgery, which in and of itself will cause an inflammatory response, can have damaging results,” Barrientos said.
The team discovered that just three days on a high-fat diet impaired fear-related memory in older rats for up to two weeks. This mirrors the impairment seen in younger rats that ate fatty food and underwent surgery.The researchers traced the brain inflammation to a protein activating the immune response.
Stephanie Muscat, assistant clinical professor of neuroscience at Ohio State, said blocking the TLR4 signaling pathway before the diet and surgery prevented neuroimmune response and memory impairments. She added that DHA supplementation also mitigated inflammatory effects and prevented memory deficits after surgery.
The research team, including Michael Butler, Menaz Bettes, James DeMarsh, Emmanuel Scaria and Nicholas Deems, tested two types of memory: contextual memory and cued-fear memory. The combination of a high-fat diet and surgery led to problems with both types of memory in aged rats, lasting at least two weeks.
Barrientos emphasized the vulnerability of cued-fear memory to diet. “What this is telling us in aged animals, along with the fact we’re seeing this same impairment in young animals after the high-fat diet and surgery, is that cued-fear memory is uniquely vulnerable to the effects of diet,” she said.
Given the growing evidence that fatty and processed foods can cause inflammation-related memory problems, Barrientos highlighted the protective effect of DHA. “DHA was really effective at preventing these changes,” she said, suggesting it might very well be a potential pretreatment, especially for individuals with unhealthy diets facing surgery.
What’s next
Future research will focus on understanding the vulnerability of the amygdala to unhealthy diet challenges and further exploring the protective mechanisms of DHA omega-3 fatty acids on brain function and memory.
