A determined couple is undertaking an unusual challenge – travelling around the entire UK coastline, visiting RNLI lifeboat stations and raising vital funds for the lifesaving charity. Allan and Helen Thornhill’s aspiring journey is a testament to their dedication and a powerful reminder of the crucial work the RNLI performs.
A Lifelong Dream and a Fear of Flying
Allan and Helen Thornhill embarked on their remarkable adventure driven by a long-held dream and a surprising twist of fate. For Helen, the journey presented a personal hurdle: a fear of flying that had kept her grounded for 15 years.
“I don’t really remember the flight as I had my eyes shut and was crying my eyes out,” Helen confessed, recalling the unexpected need to fly when rough seas prevented a ferry crossing to the Scilly Isles. This initial flight, though daunting, marked the beginning of a transformative experience.
The couple balances their charity work with their regular jobs, undertaking the challenge during their holidays. This dedication highlights their commitment to the RNLI and the communities it serves.
Witnessing the RNLI in Action
The Thornhills’ journey isn’t just about visiting stations; it’s about witnessing the RNLI’s impact firsthand. During their travels, they’ve had the privilege of observing lifeboat crews in action. In Cardigan, Pembrokeshire, they witnessed a dramatic rescue unfold before their eyes. “They successfully towed a small boat back to harbour,” Helen recounted. “It made us realize what our challenge is all about.”
Pembrokeshire itself proved to be a stunning location, further fueling their passion for the cause. These experiences have reinforced the importance of the RNLI’s work and inspired them to push their fundraising efforts even further.
Doubling Their Fundraising Goal
The couple initially set a fundraising target of £2,380, which they impressively reached in June. Though, inspired by the support they’ve received and the vital work of the RNLI, they’ve decided to double their goal.
They are now aiming to raise a total of £4,760 to support the RNLI’s lifesaving operations. Every donation, no matter how small, will contribute to ensuring that RNLI crews can continue to respond to emergencies around the UK coastline. You can support Allan and helen’s challenge by [insert link to fundraising page here].
Why the RNLI Matters
The Royal National lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is a charity that saves lives at sea. Funded entirely by public donations, the RNLI provides a 24/7 search and rescue service around the UK and ireland.
Here’s why their work is so critical:
Volunteer Crews: The vast majority of RNLI crew members are volunteers, dedicating their time and risking their lives to help others.
Modern Lifeboats: The RNLI operates a fleet of modern lifeboats, equipped with advanced technology to navigate challenging conditions.
coastal safety: Beyond rescues, the RNLI also focuses on flood rescue, water safety education, and preventing accidents.
24/7 Availability: The RNLI is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, responding to emergencies in all types of weather.
The Thornhills’ journey is a powerful reminder of the RNLI’s dedication and the importance of supporting this vital charity. Their commitment to circumnavigating the UK coastline is not only a personal achievement but also a significant contribution to ensuring the safety of those who use our seas.
