The American newspaper New York Post reported the story of a middle-aged woman with flu symptoms who had 20cm of her buttocks amputated after shock.

Tracey de Jong-Eglin (59), Scottish, English, living in the Netherlands, showed flu symptoms including profuse cold sweats last January. Then, five days later, she suddenly developed septic shock and collapsed.

During the examination, doctors found a large black lump on his left buttock. He was infected with a deadly bacterium called necrotizing fasciitis and his survival rate was only 10% because he had already developed so much necrosis. Eglin remained in a coma for nine days and underwent three surgeries to remove infected tissue and muscle.

Eglin, who has two children, said: “I’m lucky to be alive even though my bottom has become ugly.” After his surgery his life changed completely. I lost about 32kg and had to learn to walk again. He will also have to live with a colostomy for the rest of his life.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a disease in which the fascia becomes inflamed due to a bacterial infection. It usually occurs in people with weakened immune systems due to chronic diseases. The exact cause is unknown, but it can rarely occur even in healthy people.

Eglin miraculously survived with a 10% chance of survival. After waking up from the coma, he had severe hallucinations and was confused about who he was. “When I woke up, I had a catheter, a colostomy and a 20cm deep wound on my buttocks. It took nurses two hours a day to change the bandages and clean the wound,” he said.

He remained in hospital for six weeks and then moved to a rehabilitation center where he received psychological and physical therapy. She revealed that although her voice has changed due to her extreme physical and mental pain, her relationship with her husband has become closer than ever. She stressed: “It is best not to take flu symptoms lightly and seek treatment in hospital.”
