Three people who were in distress on a deserted island were saved by writing ‘HELP’, which means ‘help’, on the sand.

According to AFP and CNN on the 11th (local time), three men in their 40s who were former sailors were shipwrecked on the 31st while sailing a 6m long motorboat from Polowat Atoll in Micronesia in the Pacific Ocean to go fishing

However, the outboard motor of the boat they were on broke after being swept away by the waves, and they ended up on a deserted island.

They wrote ‘HELP’ on the beach with palm leaves and waited for rescue. They spent a week eating coconuts and drinking fresh water from a small well.

When the three did not return over time, a relative reported them missing, and the US Coast Guard was notified. The search began on the 6th.

On the 7th, the second day of the Coast Guard search, a US Navy P-8A reconnaissance aircraft dispatched from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, issued a ‘HELP’ sign written on the beach of Piquelon Atoll.

“This resourceful behavior was instrumental in helping rescue teams find them,” said Search and Rescue mission leader Chelsea Garcia.

The Navy, which found the three fishermen, dropped a survival kit, and a day later, a Coast Guard HC-130 flying from Barbers Point, Hawaii, dropped a radio. They confirmed over the radio that the three men were in good health and that they wanted to return.

Previously, in August 2020, three Micronesian sailors were found stranded in Pikelot due to lack of fuel. They reportedly wrote the word ‘SOS’ in large letters on the beach, and Australian and American fighter planes rescued the crew.
