Ecatepec Workers Block Roads Demanding Back pay, Better conditions
ECATEPEC, Mexico – Hundreds of workers from the Sindicato Único de Trabajadores del Estado y Municipios (SUTEYM) in Ecatepec have blocked major roadways for 12 hours, demanding overdue wages and improved working conditions.
“Until they deposit our money, we will not move,” declared Juan Gabriel Ninguna Pérez, the union’s secretary of finance.
Pérez stated that nearly 4,100 employees have gone without their full salaries and benefits for the past five years.
Workers also allege irregularities in their paychecks, including unjustified deductions from their holiday bonuses, and claim that funds have been withheld since 2023.
Despite agreements reached with state and municipal authorities in October, promising to settle the debts in November and finalize payments by December 9th, no resolution has been reached.
The roadblocks have caused significant traffic disruptions throughout the city, highlighting the growing frustration among SUTEYM members.
Ecatepec Workers Take a Stand: 12-Hour Road Block Over Unpaid Wages
Ecatepec, Mexico – Frustration boiled over in Ecatepec on Tuesday as hundreds of workers from the Sindicato Único de Trabajadores del Estado y Municipios (SUTEYM) took to the streets, blocking major roadways for 12 hours. Their demands: overdue wages and improved working conditions.
“Until they deposit our money, we will not move,” declared Juan Gabriel Ninguna Pérez, the union’s secretary of finance. Pérez claims nearly 4,100 employees have been denied full salaries and benefits for the past five years. He also alleges irregularities in paychecks, including unjustified deductions from holiday bonuses and the withholding of funds as 2023.
This drastic action follows broken promises from state and municipal authorities. Agreements reached in October promised to settle debts by November, with final payments slated for December 9th. The lack of resolution has driven SUTEYM members to take matters into their own hands, causing notable disruption to the city’s traffic flow.
This developing story highlights the increasing tension between Ecatepec’s essential workers and their employers. With no immediate resolution in sight, the future remains uncertain for the city and its workforce.
