WSL Fiji Pro 2024: Potential Shift to Restaurants for Championship Finals
Table of Contents
The World Surf League (WSL) championship Tour is set to return to Fiji, and anticipation is building for a potential change of venue for the final event of the season. While Cloudbreak is the conventional location, Restaurants reef is emerging as a strong contender, notably given the forecast for September 2nd.
Event Timeline and Forecast
According to Renato, the WSL plans to begin the event on September 2nd, with the goal of crowning world champions that day. The forecast for that date is particularly captivating, with potential for notable swell at both Cloudbreak and Restaurants.
Jojo Roper, a San Diego-based big wave surfer currently stationed on Tavarua, predicts September 2nd will deliver substantial surf. Roper noted, “I see 9/2 being the biggest day of surf.Weird numbers for Cloudbreak but plenty of energy to make some serious chunk. Great Restaurants numbers, too, but I personally wanna see big barrels and carnage…Restaurants will be perfect. Wave machine perfection. Nice little tubes and rippable lip bash city! Mellow tides, too, so could add to the consistency of perfection.”
However,Roper also cautioned that Fiji’s surf is unpredictable. “it’s a tough call! But what’s funny is, no matter what the forecast says, this place shows us what it wants to do every swell… and always has windows of pumping Cloudbreak…very funny place to forecast.”
Why Restaurants?
Restaurants, located near Cloudbreak on the Tavarua reef system, offers a different wave characteristic. While Cloudbreak is known for it’s powerful, heavy barrels, Restaurants typically provides more playful, rippable waves. This could lead to a more dynamic and visually appealing final event, possibly favoring surfers with a wider range of skills.
The appeal of Restaurants lies in its consistency and potential for “wave machine perfection,” as described by Roper. The mellow tides predicted for September 2nd could further enhance this consistency, creating ideal conditions for high-performance surfing.
WSL’s Commitment to Fiji
The WSL announced in July 2024 that the Championship Tour will return to Fiji through 2029, demonstrating a long-term commitment to the region. This multi-year deal ensures that Fiji will remain a key destination on the WSL calendar for years to come.
