Nintendo Switch 2 Launch Sees Scalpers‘ Prices Amid Supply Concerns
Updated June 5, 2025
Teh Nintendo Switch 2 officially launched June 5, with eager gamers in earlier time zones already diving in. As midnight sweeps across North America, others will join them. While many preordered to avoid lines, some are turning to scalpers, facing inflated prices for the new game console.
Resellers on platforms like eBay and Mercari are taking advantage of fears surrounding potential shortages and tariff implications. The Switch 2, which retails for $450, is being listed for hundreds more. Some listings promise quick shipping for nearly double the price, while others are subject to active bidding.
Nintendo has historically faced supply issues, including with the original Switch. The company has already cautioned Japanese customers about potential hardware scarcity. To combat scalping, Nintendo limited direct purchases to one console per account, requiring users to have at least 50 hours of playtime on their existing Switch account.
Despite thes measures, some buyers reportedly secured multiple preorders through retailers like Amazon and Walmart. Others admitted to resorting to scalpers after failing to obtain their own consoles.
“I have no shame,” wrote a user on the GameFaqs forum, admitting to paying roughly $700, including expedited shipping, to secure a console without a Mario Kart bundle.
Nintendo declined to comment. Earlier this month, the company announced plans to collaborate with Mercari, Yahoo Auctions, Yahoo fleamarket, and Rakuten Rakuma to combat scalping by removing listings and banning users—initially only in Japan. These measures are slated to begin June 5.
Tariffs may also play a role. Nintendo temporarily delayed preorders following tariff announcements. While the console’s price remains unchanged for now, accessories have become more expensive. With older consoles also seeing price increases, a post-launch price hike for the Switch 2 isn’t out of the question.
Furthermore, some retailers have reportedly canceled preorders due to system errors or stock shortages, perhaps leaving buyers empty-handed.
What’s next
Gamers should monitor official channels for updates on availability and pricing. As nintendo’s anti-scalping measures take effect in Japan, it remains to be seen whether similar actions will be implemented globally to stabilize the market and ensure fair access to the highly anticipated console.
