Syd Lawrence, the former cricketer who became Gloucestershire’s club president in 2022, has died after a battle with motor neurone disease (MND). He was a prominent campaigner for MND support following his diagnosis last year.
Lawrence’s journey included owning a nightclub and pursuing amateur bodybuilding after his cricket career. His dedication to Gloucestershire cricket and his subsequent advocacy made him a respected figure.
In a September interview,Lawrence mentioned that Rob Burrow,the former rugby league player who also died from MND,inspired him. he also spoke with Burrow’s friend, Kevin Sinfield, after his own diagnosis. Lawrence’s courage in facing the disease resonated with many.
Last year, after Gloucestershire won the T20 Blast, captain James Bracey presented Lawrence with the trophy in an emotional moment. The team and supporters also showed their support during a ‘Pink4Syd’ day.
Lawrence recently released his autobiography, “In Syd’s Voice – The Extraordinary Life of Syd Lawrence,” which details highlights from his career and personal life. His family described him as a proud Gloucestershire man who faced every challenge head-on.
