Sydney’s Jewish Community Rattled by Arson Attack on Daycare Centre

ficie of shock and fear swept through Australia’s Jewish community once again as a non-religious daycare centre in Sydney’s eastern suburbs was targeted in an apparent antisemitic arson attack. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, left a smoke-stainedtwo-storey building and a community reeling.

Only About Children, situated near the Maroubra synagogue and Mount Sinai college, was set alight and graffitied, leaving the air thick with the smell of burnt timber by morning. This incident is part of a worrying trend; since late November, there have been six major antisemitic incidents in Sydney and one in Melbourne, with five involving arson.

The attack hit particularly close to home for many, as the daycare centre is not exclusively Jewish but serves a diverse community. Anna, a Jewish mother living in the area, expressed her horror, saying, "It felt more dangerous… because it appeared directed at little children. It’s absolutely shocking."

Rabbi Dr. Benjamin Elton, chief minister of the Great Synagogue, echoed these sentiments, noting the growing anxiety among parents as the new school term approaches. "There’s a great deal of stress and anxiety," he said, with parents uncertain about sending their children to school.

Nick Klein, a local parent and member of the Maroubra synagogue, was also shaken by the incident. "It’s very close to home. To smell the fire here, it’s shocking," he said, adding, "It’s a disgrace."

The racism unleashed in these incidents has distressed members of the community like Michelle Anna Berkon, a pro-Palestinian Jewish advocate and former synagogue member. "This is a really awful thing to happen in the Jewish community I grew up in," she said.

Alex Ryvchin, co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), described the attack on the childcare centre as "a depth of savagery that is difficult to imagine." Ironically, his former home was vandalised and cars torched just days earlier.

In response to the growing concern, the national cabinet met on Tuesday and agreed to establish a new national database tracking antisemitic crime. NSW police have also doubled the number of investigators dedicated to antisemitic incidents, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Sarah Schwartz, from the Jewish Council of Australia, called for a "principled anti-racism response that addresses the root cause of this violence," urging politicians not to exploit the incident for political gain.

As the community braces itself for what comes next, one thing is clear: the once-unthinkable has become a stark reality, and the дор will not stand idly by.

This horrific arson ⁤attack on the Only About Children daycare center is⁤ a stark reminder of the persistent threat of antisemitism. It is a calculated act of violence aimed at instilling fear and disrupting the lives of a‍ peaceful‍ community. This ⁤incident demands a unified and resolute response. Law⁢ enforcement must thoroughly investigate this crime and bring ⁢the perpetrators to justice. The broader community, including government officials, religious leaders, and ⁢individuals from ⁤all walks of life, must stand in solidarity‍ with Sydney’s Jewish community, rejecting⁤ hate and prejudice in all its forms. We ⁣must ⁤work together to ensure that such acts of intolerance are condemned in the strongest⁢ possible terms and that the jewish community feels safe ⁢and secure in their homes, schools, and⁢ places of worship. Silence in the face‍ of bigotry is complicity. It is time to speak out, to act, and⁤ to build ⁣a⁤ future where hate crimes have no place.
This arson attack on the Only About Children daycare center, while targeting a non-religious institution, deeply resonates with the Jewish community due to its location and the broader context of escalating antisemitism in Australia. The fear etched on the faces of parents, the pain of knowing innocent children were threatened, and the sense of unease shadowing the new school term, are stark reminders of the fragility of safety and the insidious nature of intolerance. This incident demands a multi-pronged response: swift and thorough inquiry by authorities, continued police presence in Jewish communities, and a united front against hate in all its forms. Australians across the diverse tapestry of faiths and backgrounds must stand together to condemn antisemitism in the strongest possible terms and build a society where such acts of terror are unthinkable. The scars of this arson attack may take time to heal, but the commitment to safety, tolerance, and justice must endure.
