Sydney Sweeney to Avoid American Eagle Campaign Questions at TIFF
Sydney Sweeney will be attending the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday to promote her new film, Christy, and will not be addressing questions regarding the recent backlash surrounding her American Eagle campaign. She intends to focus solely on the film, its preparation, and her collaboration with the cast and crew.
“I am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it, and I’m not there to talk about jeans,” Sweeney told Vanity Fair in a pre-festival interview.”The movie’s about Christy, and that’s what I’ll be there to talk about.”
The American Eagle campaign, launched this summer, faced criticism for its tagline, “sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans/Genes,” which some interpreted as a reference to eugenics.Despite the controversy, the collection has seen strong sales.

Sweeney declined to comment further on the campaign to Vanity Fair. American Eagle previously issued a statement in August asserting the campaign “is and always was about the jeans.” The campaign garnered support from figures like Donald Trump and Fox News, while receiving criticism from artists such as Lizzo and Doja Cat.
Christy is Sweeney’s second collaboration with director David Michôd.
