Tadej Pogacar has once again showcased his amazing dominance in the Tour de France, securing his fourth stage victory with a commanding performance in Thursday’s uphill time trial to Peyragudes. The Slovenian sensation, riding for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, opted for an aero road bike, a strategic choice that paid off handsomely as he left his rivals trailing in his wake.
A Masterclass in the Mountains
Pogacar blitzed the challenging course, finishing a remarkable 36 seconds ahead of his closest GC rival, Jonas Vingegaard, and a notable 1 minute and 20 seconds in front of Primož Roglič. This emphatic win has further solidified Pogacar’s grip on the yellow jersey, extending his overall lead over Vingegaard to an impressive 4 minutes and 7 seconds. While Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Swift-Step) was caught by Vingegaard during the stage, he still holds onto third place in the general classification, albeit now 7 minutes and 24 seconds behind the relentless Pogacar.
Pogacar’s Viewpoint: A Calculated Risk
Speaking after his victory, a jubilant Pogacar expressed his immense satisfaction. “I am super happy,” he stated. “This time trial was a big question mark from December for me. I wanted everything to be perfect, and the team delivered in the final moments for everything to be on the top.”
He elaborated on his approach to the stage, revealing his meticulous preparation. “I started the day good.I had an easy morning and a nice preparation. I was really targeting an all-out start and finish and to smash the pedals as much as possible. I almost blew up,but I saw the timer at the top,and it gave me an extra push because I knew I was going to win.”
Pogacar’s decision to use an aero road bike instead of a dedicated time trial machine, a choice favored by many of his competitors, proved to be a masterstroke. It highlighted his confidence in his own abilities and his team’s strategic planning.
What This Means for the Tour
This latest triumph marks a significant moment in the 2023 Tour de France. His ability to not only win but to do so with such a significant margin, especially on a course that suited his strengths, demonstrates his formidable form and unwavering determination.
As the race progresses, all eyes will be on how Vingegaard and the other contenders attempt to respond to Pogacar’s dominance. The mountains are still to come, and while Pogacar has shown he can win anywhere, the upcoming stages will undoubtedly provide further opportunities for dramatic shifts in the general classification.
