[Reporter Lu Yixuan/Taipei Report]The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that in response to the spread of the Wuhan pneumonia (new coronavirus disease, COVID-19) variant virus in Bhutan, the Chinese Embassy in India and Singapore has contacted the Bhutanese non-profit organization “Gyalyum Charitable”. Trust” (GCT) donated 50 oxygen generators and 2,000 N95 masks. The Chinese and Bhutan national flags and the words “Taiwan helps” can be seen on the outer packaging of the donated materials. The materials were successfully delivered to the local area by a special plane of Bhutan Airways this afternoon.

The Omicron variant virus strain has recently spread in Bhutan, and the number of local confirmed cases has risen sharply, which has spread the epidemic in Bhutan’s capital Thimphu and other places, and put the medical system under enormous pressure. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release in the evening, stating that in order to fulfill my international epidemic prevention responsibilities, my country’s representative offices in India and Singapore are in intermediary contact to jointly assist Bhutan in fighting the epidemic. An oxygen generator and 2,000 N95 masks.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that after the medical and anti-epidemic materials were airlifted to Singapore via Taipei, our minister in Singapore, Dai Huiyuan, on behalf of the Chinese government, delivered the materials to the GCT window in the country, and continued to be carried by a special plane of Druk Air on the 27th. The goods arrived in Bhutan in the afternoon, and GCT expresses its sincere gratitude to my country for its immediate assistance.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the epidemic does not respect national borders, and the urgency and importance of global and regional cooperation in epidemic prevention are even more highlighted at this time. Taiwan has the ability and willingness to continue to contribute to the international community and work together to assist Bhutan in tackling the challenge of epidemic prevention.

Bhutan is the only member state of the United Nations that has neither established diplomatic relations with my country nor with the People’s Republic of China. Taiwan and Bhutan have not set up representative offices in each other. Currently, the business in Bhutan is under the jurisdiction of our representative office in India (Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India).
