Taiwan Hit by Strong Earthquake, Buildings Tilt Dangerously – Rescue Efforts Underway

This is Taiwan, where a strong earthquake occurred around 9 am today.

A nine-story red building tilts to the right almost 45 degrees, as if it might collapse at any moment.

Another five-story building on the dusty street also leaned precariously to the left.

The roof of the building fell and hit the pavement where the motorbike was parked, and people appeared to be running around checking out the situation.

In a video filmed at the office of a broadcasting company in Taiwan around the same time, items placed on a desk spill onto the floor, the building shakes, and desk drawers open and close arbitrarily.

At approximately 8:58 am today, a strong earthquake above magnitude 7 occurred in the sea 23km southeast of Hualien County, eastern Taiwan.

The US Geological Survey and the European Mediterranean Seismological Center measured the magnitude of the earthquake at 7.4.

In addition, it was observed that an aftershock of magnitude 6.5 occurred 10 minutes later.

Hualien County is a coastal city in central Taiwan with a population of 350,000, and Reuters said tremors were felt in the capital Taipei due to the strong earthquake.

Accordingly, a tsunami warning of up to 3 meters high was issued in Okinawa Prefecture, including the Japanese island near Taiwan.

According to the Japanese public broadcaster, NHK, the first tsunami of 30 cm was observed on Yonaguni Island in the southwestern part of the country.

NHK suspended regular broadcasts and urged residents in the area to move to higher ground.
