Taipei, Taiwan – democratic Progressive party (DPP) legislator Guo Yuqing publicly apologized too People’s Party legislator Chen Zhaoji for misquoting him during a legislative hearing on surrogacy. The incident sparked controversy and drew criticism from chen Zhaoji’s party colleagues.
The controversy arose during a review of the draft amendment to the Artificial Insemination Law. Guo Yuqing, when questioned about surrogacy, cited a statement attributed to Chen Zhaoji: “My adopted son is an outsider to me.” Though, it was later revealed that this statement was likely a misquote of a netizen’s comment, not Chen Zhaoji’s own words.
Eight legislators from the People’s Party held a press conference to express their support for Chen Zhaoji, who has been a vocal advocate for surrogacy rights. People’s Party General Convener Huang Guochang accused DPP legislators of spreading harmful misinformation and demanded a public apology.
Chen Zhaoji, visibly upset, stated that the false quote not only hurt his family but also families across Taiwan who have adopted children. He emphasized his long-standing support for surrogacy and his adopted son’s encouragement to enter politics to champion the cause.Following the press conference,Guo Yuqing approached Chen Zhaoji with a bouquet of flowers and offered a sincere apology. He acknowledged his mistake, attributing it to a misunderstanding of online comments. Guo Yuqing also took responsibility for any errors made by his office staff and pledged to be more careful in his future statements.
In a gesture of reconciliation, Chen Zhaoji presented Guo Yuqing with a book he had written 20 years ago promoting surrogacy, hoping to put the matter to rest.
