[Newtalk新聞] Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland this week, “Currently most of the world’s high-end chip manufacturing capacity is concentrated in Taiwan , and now we are dealing with that, but it may take decades to resolve.”

According to CNN, Kissinger said that in the last 30 years, 80% of the semiconductor production in the United States and Europe have moved 80% of their production capacity to Asia. Among them, most of the world’s high-end chip production capacity is concentrated in Taiwan, Intel is dealing with this problem, but it will take decades to solve it.

Geisinger pointed out that the location of oil reserves has defined geopolitics for the past 50 years, but for the next 50 years, global politics will be dominated by the availability of microchips, trade and investment. Intel has invested $20 billion in two fabs in the US and $90 billion in new fabs in Europe in an effort to regain its leadership in the semiconductor industry.

The pandemic has wreaked havoc on the semiconductor supply chain, leading to severe chip shortages around the world. Kissinger emphasized that the current global economy has seen major changes, and the semiconductor industry has shown a weak trend in the supply and demand cycle. Therefore, the industry must be revised down in the short term to cope with demand weak, and Intel’s investment in Fabs is like stepping at the same time, brake and accelerator.
