The U.S. military manufacturer “Lockheed Martin” conducted the fifth test launch of the U.S. Army’s next-generation “Precision Strike Missile (PrSM)” at the Vandenberg Space Base in California on the 13th. The pass successfully broke through the 500 km distance and reached the test goal.

According to a report by the military news website Defense One, the new “Precision Strike Missile” provides ground force commanders with greater range, lethality, survivability, and missile load. The attack range is set from 60 to at least 499. Kilometers are considered to be a crucial weapon against China. If deployed on the western coast of Taiwan’s main island, the attack range will penetrate approximately 200 kilometers into the mainland’s coastal provinces.

According to records, “Loma” conducted 3 test firings between 2019 and 2020, with test ranges of 240 kilometers, 180 kilometers and 85 kilometers respectively, and all successfully hit the target. Among them, the 85-kilometer test fired for the third time, the test missile still hits accurately under “short range” and “high angle” shooting conditions. The fourth test shot was on May 12 this year. It successfully hit a target 400 kilometers away and broke the farthest record. Rumor has it that this record was set again in less than half a year.

PrSM was developed by the U.S. Army in order to replace the active Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS). In the initial stage of development, the U.S.-Russian Intermediate-Range Missile Agreement was restricted. At “499 kilometers”, PrSM will exceed 500 kilometers without restrictions after the United States and Russia terminate the agreement.

The biggest feature of PrSM is the use of the “HIMARS” multi-tube rocket as a vehicle, which means it can share the platform with the previous generation ATACMS. Taiwan only purchased 11 Haimas launch systems and 64 ATACMS tactical missiles from the United States in 2020. If the US military decides to purchase PrSM in the future, and Taiwan Strait does have a battlefield “demand”, it cannot be ruled out that it can also become a counterattack weapon for Taiwan’s artillery.
