-Takaichi and Lee: Japan-South Korea Relations Rise Amid China Tension
Japan and South Korea Strengthen Ties with Focus on wartime Laborers and Economic Security
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of Japan and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung
met in Nara on Tuesday and affirmed the strategic importance of their
bilateral relationship. A key outcome of the meeting was an agreement to
conduct DNA testing to identify the remains of Korean laborers who died while
working in Japan during World War II.[1]
The leaders also pledged to enhance cooperation on economic security
initiatives. This meeting marked the first instance of “shuttle diplomacy” –
regular reciprocal visits - under takaichi’s governance.[2]
the meeting occurred shortly after President Lee concluded talks with Chinese
President Xi Jinping, against a backdrop of strained relations between
Beijing and Tokyo.[3]
“Beginning with this visit, I hope to further elevate Japan-South Korea
relations to new heights,” Prime Minister Takaichi stated during a joint
press conference.[2]
