The Taliban, an Islamic militant organization in power in Afghanistan, has carried out another public execution.

According to the Associated Press and AFP on the 23rd (local time), Taliban authorities shot two men convicted of murder to death in front of thousands of citizens at a football stadium in Ghazni, south-eastern Afghanistan, around 1 pm on the day previous

“These two men were found guilty of murder, and the death sentence was ordered after a two-year trial in court,” Supreme Court official Atiqullah Darwish said before the execution, reading out a death warrant signed by the leader of the Taliban, Haibatullah Akhundzada, did .

Religious scholars pleaded with the victims’ families to forgive the death row inmates, but the families refused and the executions were carried out.

According to the Taliban, the two people executed that day were men named Saeed Jamal and Gul Khan. Said is suspected of murder with a weapon in 2017 and Gul in 2022.

The Taliban explained that they were guilty of murder and sentenced to death after three trials, including in court, the court of appeal, and the supreme court.

However, the human rights group Rawadari claimed that unfair investigations and trials took place, including torture, forced confessions, and violations of the principle of presumption of innocence.

After regaining power in August 2021, the Taliban introduced Islamic law (Sharia) as law. Specifically, in 2022, Akundzada stressed to the judges “after carefully investigating cases of theft, kidnapping, terrorism, etc., they are responsible for enforcing hudud and qisas if they meet all the conditions of Shari ah.” The punishment is to be executed accordingly.

Hudud is Islamic punishment for serious crimes such as murder, theft, rape, and adultery, and is known to include execution, stoning, amputation, and flogging. Qisas is a concept of proportional correspondence, which means ‘an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.’

This is the third time since December 2022 and June 2023 that the Taliban have carried out public executions since coming back to power.
