Tangshan Team Takes Home Medals in Hebei Provincial Games Youth Group Chess Competition

The 16th Hebei Provincial Sports Games concluded on September 11, 2023, with the youth group chess competition held at the prestigious Longshan Hotel in Shexian County, Handan. Organized by the Hebei Provincial People’s Government and hosted by the Hebei Provincial Sports Bureau and Handan Municipal People’s Government, this competition showcased the talents of young chess players in the region. The event was co-organized by the Hebei Provincial Sports Bureau Chess and Card Sports Center, Handan Municipal Sports Bureau, and Shexian County Government.

The competition consisted of two groups, Group A and Group B, with three categories: men’s individual, women’s individual, and mixed team. A total of 134 athletes from 11 units participated in the tournament, competing through group round-robin matches and cross-elimination qualifications. Tangshan Sports Bureau sent 14 athletes to represent their city.

After four intense days of competition, six athletes from the Tangshan team made it to the finals, clinching a silver and two bronze medals. Lu Ziyi and Han Shize secured second and third place, respectively, in the men’s Group A category. The Tangshan team, comprised of Qi Zhenhan, Kang Biao, and Zhang Jingyi, achieved third place in the mixed team Group B. Yao Siyu claimed fourth place in the women’s Group B category. Overall, the Tangshan team ranked fourth in the team score of the competition.

The successful athletes, all hailing from No. 54 Middle School in Tangshan, are Qi Zhenhan (Class 3, Grade 7, South Campus), Zhang Jingyi (Class 4, Grade 7), Han Shize (Class 7, Grade 8, Main Campus), and Yao Siyu (Class 14, Grade 7). These talented individuals have proven their dedication and skill in chess.

Every competition brings a mix of joy and regret, reminding participants that success requires hard work and perseverance. The athletes who took part in the Provincial Games expressed their intentions to compete again in three years’ time, showcasing their growth and improved abilities on the field.
