A Tarom Boeing 737 co-pilot took control of the aircraft and executed an emergency landing in Bucharest after the captain fainted mid-flight due to extreme fatigue, according to airline officials and aviation authorities. The incident occurred on April 19, 2026, during a scheduled flight from Cluj-Napoca to Bucharest, when the pilot became unresponsive shortly after takeoff, prompting the co-pilot to declare an emergency and land the plane safely at Henri Coandă International Airport. All 87 passengers and four crew members aboard were unharmed.

Tarom confirmed in a statement that the pilot had reported having zero sleep the night before the flight and had collapsed in the cockpit shortly after reaching cruising altitude. The co-pilot, who remained conscious and alert, assumed full control of the aircraft, communicated with air traffic control, and performed a routine landing approximately 20 minutes after the incident began. Emergency medical teams met the aircraft on the runway and provided immediate assistance to the pilot, who was later transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

Romania’s Civil Aeronautical Authority opened an investigation into the event, focusing on crew rest compliance, flight duty time limitations, and adherence to European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulations. Preliminary findings indicate that the pilot had been scheduled for a duty period that may have exceeded recommended limits under fatigue risk management protocols. EASA requires airlines to implement systems that monitor and mitigate pilot fatigue, including rest periods between flights and limits on consecutive duty hours.

Industry experts noted that while such incidents are rare, they underscore ongoing concerns about pilot fatigue in commercial aviation, particularly on short-haul routes where quick turnarounds and early departures can disrupt sleep patterns. A 2024 study by the European Cockpit Association found that over 60% of pilots reported experiencing fatigue that impaired their performance during flights, with many citing pressure to accept last-minute schedule changes or inadequate rest between flights.

Tarom stated that it is cooperating fully with investigators and has temporarily removed the involved crew members from flight duty pending the outcome of the investigation. The airline emphasized its commitment to safety and said it would review its crew scheduling and fatigue management practices in light of the event. The aircraft involved, a Boeing 737-300, returned to service after a standard inspection confirmed no technical issues contributed to the incident.

As of April 20, 2026, the pilot remains under medical observation, though initial reports indicate no life-threatening conditions. Authorities have not released the pilot’s name or the co-pilot’s identity, citing privacy regulations. No disciplinary actions have been announced, and the investigation is expected to take several weeks to complete.
