San Diego Padres outfielder Fernando⁣ Tatis Jr.⁢ is suing Big League Advance (BLA), alleging⁤ predatory lending practices. The lawsuit,filed in San Diego County superior Court,accuses⁢ BLA of luring Tatis into an “investment deal” that was ‌actually an illegal loan.

Tatis, 26, claims BLA misrepresented its unlicensed ‌status and pushed him‍ into loan⁢ terms⁢ violating California’s consumer protection​ laws. ⁣He seeks‌ to protect young players from similar schemes. “I’m ⁤fighting this battle not just for myself but for everyone still chasing their dream,” Tatis said in a statement.

BLA ⁣and similar companies have faced accusations‌ of targeting young minor leaguers, notably Latin American players‍ from disadvantaged backgrounds, with complex agreements. Former‍ major league catcher ‍Francisco Mejía‍ is also suing BLA.

Tatis said he used the $2 million advance to improve his training, diet and living situation as he ​progressed through‌ the minor leagues. The lawsuit alleges BLA has operated‌ “an unlicensed lending business that evades legal​ oversight.”

Michael Schwimer,‍ former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher,‌ is the president and CEO of BLA. The⁢ BLA advance is technically not a loan; players do not owe repayment if they fail to reach the major leagues.

Tatis has⁣ become one of baseball’s top players. the two-time All-Star entered Monday with a .268 batting average, .359 on-base percentage, .460 ‍slugging ⁤percentage, 14 home runs, and 15 stolen bases.
