tavares, who was set to‍ become an⁢ unrestricted free agent July 1, opted to remain⁤ with the Leafs, even if it meant leaving money⁢ on the table. His decision underscores his commitment to the team ⁣and the city.

“Obviously left some money out there,” Tavares said during a media call. He added that he has ‍”done pretty well” and values playing⁢ for a strong team in his hometown with ⁣a genuine chance to win.

The 34-year-old is coming off a productive season, tallying 38 goals and 74 points in ‍75 games. he’s also nearing the 500-goal milestone, a feat only 48 NHL players have achieved. His dedication to advancement has kept him among the league’s elite.

“It ⁢never really got to the point where I had to really look at other [choices],”⁣ Tavares said, citing his comfort with his role and the team. He believes he can continue to ⁣play at a high level ⁢and contribute significantly.

General Manager Brad Treliving acknowledged Tavares could have earned more elsewhere. However, tavares’s⁣ focus remained on staying in Toronto. Treliving⁢ recognized the risk associated with the length of the contract, given Tavares’s age,but expressed confidence in his continued ⁢performance.

“We all expect aging curves to kick in at ⁤some point,” Treliving said, while also noting‍ Tavares’s exceptional ⁤commitment to his physical condition and readiness.

Retaining Tavares was a priority for the Maple Leafs, especially with uncertainty surrounding Mitch Marner‘s future with the team. Keeping Tavares as the second-line center behind auston Matthews provides⁢ stability up front as the team looks to ⁣make another playoff push.
