The Arabsat Incident of 2001
In 2001, a significant technical malfunction caused the loss of an Arabsat satellite’s orbital path, triggering a substantial insurance claim. Naji Al-Tamimi, CEO of the Insurance Authority, detailed the event during a recent interview on the Rotana Khalijiya channel’s “fi Al-Sawra” program.
The incident involved a major customer of the Tawuniya insurance company, now known as the Cooperative Insurance Company. abdullah Al-Mudaifer, formerly responsible for major accounts at Tawuniya, prompted Al-Tamimi to recount the story.
A $145 Million Compensation
The resulting compensation payout reached $145 million. Al-Tamimi explained that despite Tawuniya holding capital of 250 million at the time, the insurance agreement itself was crucial in covering the extensive loss.
This payout underscores the critical role of robust insurance coverage in mitigating risks associated with space-based assets. The incident highlights the potential financial impact of satellite failures and the importance of thorough insurance policies for organizations operating in the space sector.
