The suspect in the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner attended by President Donald Trump has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old teacher, engineer, and independent video game developer from Torrance, California.
Allen, who lived in the Los Angeles suburb of Torrance, was named by multiple officials as the individual who rushed a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton on the night of April 25, 2026, armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives. He exchanged gunfire with law enforcement before being subdued near the ballroom where President Trump and other administration officials were gathered with journalists for the annual dinner.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Allen holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology, earned in 2017, and a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills, completed in May 2025. He described himself on the platform as a “mechanical engineer and computer scientist by degree, independent game developer by experience, teacher by birth.”
Allen worked as a part-time teacher at C2 Education, a tutoring service specializing in college test preparation, for over six years. A Facebook post from December 2024 shows him receiving a “Teacher of the Month” award at the company’s Torrance office. One of his former students, identified only as 17-year-old Jason, recalled Allen as a “good teacher” and a “smart guy,” expressing surprise at the allegations against him.
In addition to his teaching role, Allen identified as a self-employed indie game developer for the past seven years. He developed and released a game titled “Bohrdom” on the Steam platform, which he describes as a “skill-based, non-violent asymmetrical fighting game loosely derived from a chemistry model that is itself loosely based on reality.”
Allen legally acquired multiple firearms in the years leading up to the attack. Reports indicate he purchased a 12-gauge shotgun approximately eight months before the incident and a .38-caliber semi-automatic pistol in October 2023. Authorities confirmed he was carrying both weapons, along with several knives, when he approached the security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton.
Investigators said Allen traveled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago and then to Washington, D.C., where he checked into the downtown hotel hosting the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner. Law enforcement is examining his electronics, writings, and conducting interviews with family and friends to determine a motive.
A note Allen allegedly sent to family members about ten minutes before the attack included apologies to his parents, colleagues, students, and bystanders. In the message, he criticized the Trump administration without naming individuals directly and referenced lax security at the hotel, stating he had expected more stringent measures.
Allen is registered to vote with no party preference but donated $25 to ActBlue, a political action committee supporting Democratic candidates, in October 2024. His sister told law enforcement that he had become involved in left-wing activism in Los Angeles in recent years, acquired firearms, and regularly practiced at a firing range, with his rhetoric becoming increasingly radical in the days before the attack.
Following the shooting, President Trump described Allen as a “lone wolf whack job” and referenced an alleged “manifesto” in which, according to the president, Allen expressed hatred toward Christians. Trump stated that Allen’s siblings had previously complained about his views to law enforcement.
The Washington Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that Allen was apprehended after charging a security point and engaging in gunfire with officers. One law enforcement officer was injured during the incident but was reported to be in “great shape.” Attendees sheltered under their tables as Secret Service agents escorted the president and other officials to safety.
Allen is expected to face federal charges on Monday, including using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon, according to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.
