LOS ANGELES (AP) — Teddi Mellencamp, former star of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” is offering an update on her stage four melanoma battle, sharing both the emotional challenges and hopeful progress she has experienced. Mellencamp, daughter of musician John Mellencamp, is using her platform to advocate for melanoma awareness, urging others to schedule skin checks.
Mellencamp,43,spoke candidly about her diagnosis at the Women’s Cancer Research Fund’s “An Unforgettable Evening” gala last week, accompanied by friend Kyle Richards. She chose to display her head scars from recent procedures, foregoing a wig and wearing a black suit with silver heels.
“This is my first night out since I got out of the hospital,” Mellencamp said. “I feel good. I know it feels really devastating right now, but everything – it gets better.”
She revealed that immunotherapy treatment has shrunk the tumors in her brain and lungs. Her doctors are optimistic about the treatment’s effectiveness. Mellencamp has one more immunotherapy session before her next check-up on June 1. Immunotherapy uses the body’s immune system to target cancer cells.Mellencamp also addressed criticism she received for riding horses during treatment, stating she consulted her doctor, who encouraged her to continue doing what she loves.
“A lot of people had issues when they saw that I was riding horses again and I am like, ‘I didn’t do this without asking my doctor,'” she said.”I asked him and he said, ‘teddi, you should be doing everything that you love right now.'”
She emphasized the importance of listening to her body and doing what feels right each day.
Mellencamp highlighted the support she receives from her children: Slate, 12; Cruz, 10; and Dove, 5, whom she shares with estranged husband Edwin Arroyave.
“Whether it was good news or bad news, we all just try to be there for each other and find special moments that we can have,” she said. “Laughter has been a huge part of what makes it so much better.”
she also expressed gratitude for the support of her father and Richards.
Mellencamp hopes her experience encourages others to be proactive about their health. She said she had tumors for up to a year before experiencing symptoms like migraines, which she initially attributed to menopause.
“The good thing is that other people are getting checked,” Mellencamp said. “I didn’t know a ton about melanoma or cancer in general until it personally affected me… The fact that I have a platform… It’s something that more people are going in to get checks and so every time I get that message, I feel good about that.”
Mellencamp recently shared on Instagram that her tumors have significantly shrunk due to immunotherapy. She has two more sessions of immunotherapy scheduled.
Mellencamp was initially diagnosed with melanoma in 2022. In February, she underwent emergency brain surgery.
Mellencamp and Arroyave have paused their divorce proceedings, which she initiated in November 2024,to focus on her health.
