Premier League legend Teddy Sheringham claimed that Manchester City forward Erling Haaland is not the top centre-forward in the English top flight, naming Liverpool signing Alexander Isak as the superior player instead.
Erling Haaland Goalscoring Figures at Manchester City
Haaland has scored 169 goals in 205 appearances since arriving at the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2022. He has won the Golden Boot in three of his four Premier League campaigns, only missing out during the 2024-25 season when Mohamed Salah claimed the award. The Norway international is tied with Lamine Yamal as the most valuable footballer in the world at €220m (£187m) according to Transfermarkt figures, and he is closing in on Sergio Aguero’s club goalscoring record.
While Haaland has been linked with eventually challenging Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League scoring record, it has been reported that Manchester City’s recent guilty verdict has cast doubt over the long-term futures of the club’s top players. Manchester City faces potential expulsion from the English top flight as punishment for the rules breaches.

Alexander Isak Transfer History and Form at Liverpool
Isak moved to Merseyside from Newcastle United for £125 million in the summer of 2025 after three productive seasons at Newcastle United. His first campaign at Anfield was disrupted by injuries and a tactical setup that featured two centre-forwards, limiting him to just four goals, Sheringham told Hajper.
The Sweden international has matched last season’s tally within his first seven appearances across all competitions in the current campaign, scoring four goals in five league matches. Isak has recorded four goals in the early 2026-27 top goalscorers race where Haaland leads with five goals and Isak sits on four alongside several other players.

Teddy Sheringham Assessment of Striker Attributes
Sheringham explained his preference for the Liverpool forward during an interview with Hajper, pointing to Isak’s movement and penalty box awareness.
For me, he’s the best striker in the Premier League. He is phenomenal. I’d like to see him win the Golden Boot this year, and not just to beat Erling Haaland but for the way that Isak plays the game, and how hungry he is for goals.Teddy Sheringham
Sheringham praised Isak’s sharp shooting and ability to create scoring opportunities through constant movement. When other strikers would be standing still on the penalty spot, he’s watching what is going on, always on the move in the box,
Sheringham stated.
Head to Head Fixture Date at Anfield
Haaland and Isak will have the opportunity to test their respective form when Manchester City travel to face Liverpool on October 11, following the international break.
