Los Angeles,CA – The soulful story of Teena Marie,the “Ivory Queen of Soul,” is set to captivate audiences once again,this time on the big screen.Her daughter, Alia Rose, recently revealed plans for a biopic that will delve into the life and musical journey of the iconic singer.
In a recent appearance on The Clay Cane Show, Alia Rose shared her excitement about the project, stating, “Ther’s a book coming out about her life and I’m working on a film as well… I haven’t really talked about it too much. But, it’s finally happening and I’m so excited about it because I feel like her story just needs to be told.”
Teena Marie, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 54, left an indelible mark on the music world. From her Rick James-produced debut album, Wild and Peaceful, in 1979, to her chart-topping hits like “Square Biz,” ”Behind the Groove,” “I Need Your Lovin’,” “Fire and Desire,” and the unforgettable “Ooo La La La” (famously sampled by the Fugees), Teena Marie’s powerful vocals and songwriting prowess resonated with millions. She sold 2.5 million albums in the soundscan era.
Alia Rose emphasizes the importance of portraying her mother’s story authentically. While she won’t be playing her mother in the film, she is committed to finding the perfect actress to embody Teena Marie’s spirit. “The audition process is going to be very serious because I don’t play that,” she asserted. “I do think that there’s somebody out there one hundred percent… I know that there is somebody out there as I took my time with it.”
This isn’t Alia’s first attempt to bring her mother’s story to life. she revealed that she had considered producing the film several years ago but ultimately decided to shelve it. Now, she’s working with a writer she trusts to create a compelling and relatable narrative.
In a 2013 interview with Soul and Jazz and Funk, alia described her mother as an “underdog” whose story is an inspiration. “It’s just the story of the underdog who really just fought to the end and just wanted to be heard,” she said. “For me it’s inspiring because I know that much is possible and against all the odds. There was a fair amount of odds against her but she still made it and she still made her mark upon the world and I think that that’s inspiring in itself.”
The biopic promises to explore the challenges and triumphs of Teena Marie’s career, offering viewers a glimpse into the life of a woman who defied expectations and left an enduring legacy.
Even in her passing, Teena Marie’s dedication to her craft shone through.at the time of her death, she was working on her 14th album, Beautiful, a follow-up to 2009’s Congo Square. Recorded at her home studio in Pasadena, the album was nearly complete, lacking only the final mixes. Alia Rose stepped in to ensure that Beautiful was released, a testament to the strong bond between mother and daughter and a final gift to Teena Marie’s devoted fans.
As the biopic moves forward, fans can anticipate a heartfelt and authentic portrayal of Teena Marie’s life, celebrating her musical genius and the unwavering spirit that made her a true icon.
