Temple University Students Reflect on COVID-19 Transition and Settlement Options

Temple University Students Reflect on COVID-19 Transition and Settlement Options

November 21, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

In Spring 2020, Temple University faced significant changes due to COVID-19. On March 16, the university sent over 37,000 students home and switched to virtual learning.

Students expressed mixed feelings about the abrupt shift. Nina Wible, from the class of 2023, recalled the anxiety surrounding the pandemic and the sudden move from campus. Vincent Tulli, a class of 2024 graduate, mentioned the challenges of adapting to Zoom classes and the unusual atmosphere on campus when classes resumed in Fall 2020. He described it as a “ghost town.”

Some students felt they did not receive full value for their tuition, prompting two lawsuits against the university. Tulli found the lawsuits unreasonable, believing Temple acted in the best interest of its students during a global health crisis. He emphasized that the university’s priority was safety amidst the pandemic, which included concerns about illness and death.

Temple University stated that it quickly adapted its operations to prioritize student safety. They described the transition to virtual learning as nearly seamless, minimizing disruptions to student learning outcomes.

Students affected by the situation can claim cash awards from the settlement. However, some reported difficulties obtaining information. Jack Byrne, a class of 2021 graduate, mentioned challenges in verifying his enrollment during 2020 and the need to provide documentation to claim his award.

Students could also decline the cash award in favor of non-cash options, such as Temple football tickets, an alumni recreation pass, or a course at the university. Stephan Konnovitch, a class of 2022 graduate, expressed a love for Temple and considered the course option appealing.

Students from spring 2020 must claim their awards by December 27. For further details, visit the Temple Covid Settlement website.
