Tesla has announced the successful completion of its first fully autonomous vehicle delivery. The milestone involved a Tesla Model Y navigating from the company’s Gigafactory in Austin, TX, through highways, suburban areas, and residential streets, ultimately arriving at a customer’s apartment complex.
CEO Elon Musk announced the achievement on X,stating the delivery occurred a day earlier than his initial June 28th projection. The autonomous driving system operated without any human intervention.
“There were no people in the car at all and no remote operators in control at any point. FULLY autonomous!” Musk wrote. “To the best of our knowledge,this is the first fully autonomous vehicle drive with no people in the car or remotely operating the car on a public highway.”
This achievement comes as Tesla continues to refine its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. The company’s robotaxi service, while launched, still requires safety monitors in the passenger seat and has experienced some early challenges, including safety lapses such as driving over double-yellow lines and phantom braking incidents.
