Paola Siri, 60, and her 15-year-old son, Mattia, were shot and killed by Daniele Baruzzo, 59, in a fatal shooting that occurred during the night between Sept. 2 and Sept. 3 inside their family home in Finale Ligure, Italy.
Investigators from the Savona prosecutor’s office discovered the bodies the following morning inside the residential villa. The magistrate overseeing the case has ordered autopsies for both Paola Siri and her son Mattia.
Investigation and Evidence Recovered at the Scene
Carabinieri investigating the incident recovered a firearm and a farewell letter during their initial sweep of the home. The weapon used in the shooting was a legally registered handgun for which Baruzzo held a valid permit and which he used at the shooting range. Neighbors reported hearing three gunshots around midnight, with investigators determining that single shots were fired at the wife, the son, and the perpetrator himself.
Inside the residence, investigators also located several handwritten notes in which Baruzzo expressed severe personal distress. The notes detailed strains exacerbated by the recent loss of his mother, who had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, alongside strong concern for his teenage son. Baruzzo was employed in an automotive company, while his wife, Paola Siri, worked as a freelance architect.
Community Reaction and Suspended Activities
The tragedy has deeply affected the local community in Finale Ligure. Angelo Berlangieri, the mayor of Finale Ligure, expressed profound sorrow over the incident and announced that municipal events scheduled for the weekend would be postponed. The mayor also confirmed that the town will observe an official day of mourning on the date of the victims’ funerals.
The local sports community also entered a period of mourning, as 15-year-old Mattia played for the youth sector of the Finale Calcio soccer club. In a public statement, the club announced the immediate suspension of all youth training sessions and matches through Sunday out of respect and remembrance for the young athlete.
