KILLEEN, Texas – A terrifying scene unfolded at the Killeen Mall Saturday evening as a pickup truck driver, fleeing police, crashed through the doors of a JCPenney store, injuring five people before being fatally shot by officers.
The incident began around 5 p.m.on interstate 14 in nearby Belton, when authorities received reports of an erratic driver in a black pickup truck. A chase ensued, spanning approximately 20 miles, culminating in the driver veering off the highway adn plowing into the mall’s parking lot.”The suspect drove through the doors and continued to drive through the JCPenney store, striking multiple people,” said Sgt. Bryan Washko of the Texas Department of Public Safety during a press briefing. “The trooper and the Killeen police officer continued on foot after this vehicle, which was driving through the store, actively running people over. He traveled several hundred yards.”
Emergency medical services rushed four victims from the mall to area hospitals, while another individual sought treatment independently. the victims ranged in age from 6 to 75 years old, and their conditions remain unknown.
As the driver continued his rampage through the store, officers from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Killeen Police Department, and three other law enforcement agencies converged on the scene. Faced with an immediate threat to public safety, they engaged in gunfire, ultimately fatally wounding the suspect.
One of the officers involved in the shootout was working as a security guard at the mall, while others were off-duty at the time.
Witnesses described a scene of pandemonium as shoppers fled in terror, the sound of gunshots echoing through the mall.
Sgt. Washko stated that authorities were withholding the suspect’s identity pending notification of next of kin. the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
