Texas Tornado leaves Trail of Destruction, One Dead in Brazoria County
Brazoria County, Texas – A powerful tornado ripped thru Brazoria County on Saturday, leaving a path of destruction and claiming the life of one person.At least four others were injured in the storm, which touched down multiple times in an area about 30 miles south of Houston.
“we rarely get tornadoes here in Brazoria County,” said Madison Polston, a spokeswoman for the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office. “If we do, for there to be damage to this extent, or injuries, is also very uncommon.”
The tornado struck around midday, tearing through at least 10 buildings, including a school and several residences. The injured were transported to a Houston-area hospital with non-critical injuries.
The storm was part of a larger weather system that spawned tornadoes across the South on Saturday. The National Weather Service issued a series of tornado warnings for areas in Louisiana,Mississippi,and Texas.
East Montgomery County, north of Houston, also reported notable structural damage from a possible tornado.The Montgomery County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management confirmed the damage, while the National Weather Service reported 16 tornado sightings across the region.
One of those tornadoes is believed to have struck the East County fire Department in Montgomery County, resulting in minor injuries.
Further east,a tornado warning was in effect for northwestern Cameron Parish,Louisiana,untill late Saturday afternoon. The National Weather Service warned residents of a “life-threatening situation” due to the potential for deadly flying debris.
The extent of the damage and the full impact of the storms are still being assessed.
