To address this alarming issue, the Youth Institute of Thailand (YIT), along with the Office of Public Dental Health, the Department of Health, and the Faculty of Dentistry at Srinakharinwirot University (SWU), have joined hands to organize the “Story ‘r Genau” activity on National Public Dental Health Day 2023. The main goal of this campaign is to effectively communicate and raise awareness among the youth and general public about the adverse oral effects of smoking.

Dr. Pairot Saonuam, Assistant Manager of the Health Promotion Support Fund, emphasizes the importance of oral health in maintaining a good quality of life. In pursuit of a disease-free existence and a well-balanced diet, reducing or quitting smoking and e-cigarettes is essential. The harmful chemicals in tobacco products, particularly nicotine, directly impact the body, leading to coronary artery disease, ischemic heart disease, and other cardiovascular issues. Furthermore, smoking and e-cigarettes pose a significant risk to the brain.

Dr. Pairot further states that smoking also significantly affects oral health, causing bad breath and potentially leading to oral cancer. The Office of Public Dental Health reported that Thailand currently ranks 6th in the world for new oral cancer cases. The numerous carcinogens present in cigarettes contribute to abnormal cell growth in the mouth. Additionally, research from the University of Southern California School of Medicine discovered that e-cigarette smokers experience greater DNA damage to their oral mucosa cells compared to traditional cigarette smokers. Mr. Pacharapat Prachuaplarp, Secretary General of the Youth Sight Foundation of Thailand, highlights the activities organized on Public Dental Health Day 2023. These include free oral health examinations provided by the Faculty of Dentistry at Srinakharinwirot University, along with discussion sessions aimed at educating the public. The event will also feature performances by talented young artists from across Bangkok, fostering direct engagement with the new generation.
