A fragile ceasefire has been declared along the disputed border between Thailand and Cambodia, following intense diplomatic efforts and a stark ultimatum from the United States. The agreement, brokered by Malaysia, aims to halt the escalating violence that has claimed civilian lives and displaced tens of thousands.
Diplomatic Breakthrough and US Leverage
Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet hailed the meeting as “very good” and expressed hope for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Cambodia had been advocating for a ceasefire since Friday, as its forces were reportedly pushed back by the superior firepower of the Thai military. Acting Thai prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai pledged to honor the ceasefire. The breakthrough is widely attributed to a decisive intervention by the united States. President Trump issued an ultimatum on Saturday night, threatening to halt all negotiations on reducing US tariffs unless both nations agreed to a ceasefire. This pressure proved instrumental, as both thailand and Cambodia are heavily reliant on exports to the US. A failure to reach a tariff reduction deal would have subjected their manufacturers to a important 36% tariff, placing them at a considerable disadvantage compared to neighboring countries like Vietnam and Indonesia, wich have already secured lower tariff rates.
Escalating Conflict and Lingering Mistrust
The situation on the front lines remains unclear, with access restricted to the military forces of both nations. Thailand claims to have gained control of several Cambodian-held hills and has maintained a sustained artillery barrage, utilizing its larger arsenal of heavy weaponry and conducting air strikes on Cambodian positions. The Thai government had initially been hesitant to engage in peace talks, asserting that a ceasefire should only follow dialogue and “sincere intentions” from Cambodia, specifically an end to rocket attacks that had resulted in the deaths of at least 14 Thai civilians.Despite the ceasefire, maintaining peace will be a significant challenge. deep mistrust now exists between the two armies, fueled by potent nationalist sentiments. Thailand is especially aggrieved by Cambodia’s use of multiple rocket launchers on Thursday, which caused the majority of civilian casualties and dramatically escalated what had previously been minor skirmishes.
Humanitarian Impact and Civilian Fears
the conflict has had a devastating impact on civilians living near the border. Older evacuees, who had experienced bombardments during the Cambodian Civil War in the 1980s,described the current situation as the worst they had witnessed. By Sunday, the Thai military reported that nearly 140,000 civilians had been evacuated to shelters across seven provinces.
In Cambodia, where media access is heavily restricted, the pro-state Khmer Times reported that approximately 135,000 people along the border were relocated on Sunday. A 75-year-old cambodian woman, evacuated to a shelter, expressed her continued fear, stating she could still hear Thai drones flying overhead. Her plea for the war to end “this evening” underscored the desperate desire for peace among those caught in the crossfire.
