Thailand’s telecom sector is poised for a boost following the recent mobile spectrum auction, with analysts predicting significant spectrum cost savings for Advanced Info service (AIS) and True Corporation. The auction, overseen by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) on june 29, saw both companies secure key acquisitions in the mid-band spectrum.
Pisut Ngamvijitvong,a senior equity research analyst at Kasikorn Securities (KS),noted that the triumphant acquisitions by AIS and True have resulted in a higher share of mid-band holdings for both companies. Advanced Wireless Network (AWN), a subsidiary of AIS, acquired 30MHz of the 2100MHz band for 14.8 billion baht. True Move H Worldwide Dialogue (TUC), a subsidiary of True, secured 20MHz of the 1500MHz band and 70MHz of the 2300MHz band with a combined bid of 26.4 billion baht. Neither company bid for the 850MHz band.
The initial payment, representing 50% of the winning bids, is due by July 29, with licenses becoming effective Aug. 4. The total winning prices, exceeding 41 billion baht, fell short of the 50 billion baht estimate projected by KS.
